Hire an automation engineer, or buy a system? The real cost, compared.

Hire when automation is continuous work, with new systems to build and change every week; buy a system priced as a project when the work is a defined set of processes. In the UAE a hire costs a salary plus visa, insurance, leave, gratuity and tools every month, while a built system is one price agreed in writing, with optional monthly care.

The honest answer depends on whether your automation work ever ends. If you have a steady stream of new workflows across the business, week after week, an employee is the right buy. If you have a defined set of processes to automate, such as enquiry routing, follow-up, CRM updates and reports, a system priced as a project lets you skip the hiring process, pay one written price and keep something documented that you own. Here is what each one really costs in the UAE.

What does an automation engineer cost in the UAE?

Start with salary. Hays' GCC Salary Guide 2025, which reports pay in dirhams from its 2024 recruitment and surveys across the Gulf, has no row called automation engineer. The nearest roles it lists are a back-end developer, at AED 20,000 to 35,000 a month, and a full-stack developer, at AED 25,000 to 40,000, as fixed monthly packages for experienced people, with figures from late 2024. That is AED 240,000 to 480,000 a year before anything else.

Then come the costs a salary does not show. Under UAE rules:

  • Recruitment, travel and residency permit costs are borne by the employer, and work permit fees depend on the permit type and your company's classification.
  • Health insurance has to be bought before a residency permit is issued or renewed, under the system in force since 1 January 2025.
  • Paid annual leave is 30 days a year after the first year, and someone has to cover the work while it is taken.
  • End-of-service gratuity is 21 days' basic salary for each of the first five years, and 30 days for each year after that.
  • Notice is 30 to 90 days, on full pay, and probation can run for up to six months.

Add a laptop, software licences, the automation platform, AI usage and the time it takes to find the right person. Then one more risk: if the knowledge lives in one person's head, it leaves with them.

What does a built automation system cost?

A built system is priced on the work, not the month. You agree the process, the result and the price in writing; the system is built and tested with your real cases; and it is handed over with documentation and a run log. Evyren's prices, next to the hire:

OptionWhat it costs and what you get
Hire an engineerAbout AED 20,000 to 40,000 a month in fixed pay for an experienced developer (Hays, late 2024), plus visa, insurance, leave, gratuity, notice and tools. Builds for as long as you employ them.
Automation SprintFrom AED 4,900. One process mapped end to end, integration with up to three tools, an AI step where it adds judgement, testing with your real cases, handover and a run log.
Automation SystemFrom AED 9,900. Several connected workflows across one part of the business, a shared data model, qualification and routing, alerts when something fails, documentation your team can read.
AI OperationsFrom AED 19,500. AI and automation across sales, operations, service and reporting, scoped in phases, starting with the workflow that matters most.
CareFrom AED 490 a month, optional. Monitoring, fixes when a tool changes, and a monthly allowance for improvements.

Software subscriptions and AI usage sit outside the build on both routes, so compare like with like. At the starting prices, an Automation System plus a year of Care comes to AED 15,780, less than one month of fixed pay at the bottom of Hays' range for a back-end developer. That comparison is unfair to the engineer, who will build far more than one system in a year. It is fair to the owner who only needs one.

When should I hire instead?

  • Automation is continuous: new workflows every week, across several departments, with no end in sight.
  • Automation is part of what you sell, such as a software product or a platform your customers use.
  • You need someone inside your systems every day, answering to your team.
  • You already have a technical lead who can set the work and judge its quality.

If that describes your business, hire. A project with an agreed price can still help while you search: the first system gets built, documented and handed to the person you hire.

When is a built system the better buy?

  • The work is a list of processes you can name: enquiries routed, leads followed up, records updated, reports sent, documents produced.
  • You want a written price and a defined result before you commit, not a salary while you find out.
  • You want the result documented and in your company's name, so it doesn't depend on one person.
  • The changes you expect after launch are small enough for a monthly allowance to cover.

How do I decide which one I need?

  1. List

Write down every task your team repeats: what it is, who does it and how often.

  2. Count

Put hours against each one for a normal month. A rough number is enough.

  3. Sort

Mark each task as defined, meaning it runs the same way every time, or open-ended, meaning it keeps changing.

  4. Price

Defined tasks are candidates for a system priced as a project. A long list of open-ended work is the case for a hire.

  5. Start

Begin with the task that costs the most hours or loses the most money, measure it before and after, and decide the next step from the result.

What should I ask before choosing either?

  • Who owns it? The accounts, the workflows and the data should be in your company's name on either route.
  • What does it cost to run? Platform subscriptions and AI usage are monthly costs whichever way you go.
  • What happens when a tool changes? Automations need maintenance, so agree who does it and how quickly.
  • Is it written down? A process your team can read survives a resignation or a change of supplier.
  • What will be measured? Agree the before and after now, and judge the result against them.

Pay a salary for work that never ends, and an agreed price for work that can be finished.

Questions people ask next

Can I start with a built system and hire later?

Yes. A documented system is easier to hand to an employee than one that lives in a supplier's head, so ask for documentation your team can read, whichever route you take first.

What about a freelancer?

A freelancer sits between the two: no visa or gratuity, but you manage the scope, the quality and what happens when they move on. Ask a freelancer the same questions about ownership, documentation and maintenance.

Do you promise time savings?

No. We define the process, measure it before and after, and report what changed.

Is AI usage included in the price?

No. AI usage and third-party subscriptions are billed separately from the build and from Care, so you see exactly what they cost.
